Mariner I4 features a new Duratec® 2.5L DOHC I4 engine with 171 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque. It has best-in-class EPA-estimated 28 highway mpg. EPA-estimated mpg: 20 city/28 hwy (FWD); 19 city/25 hwy (4WD).

Want more power? Choose the Duratec 3.0L DOHC V6 engine on the Mariner V6 and Mariner Premier, featuring 240 horsepower and 223 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s enough power to pull up to 3,500 lbs. when properly equipped, yet still provide an EPA-estimated mpg of 18 city/26 hwy (FWD); 17 city/24 hwy (4WD).

There’s also Mariner Hybrid — the world’s most fuel-efficient SUV** — equipped with a new 2.5L 16-valve I4 gas engine with a permanent-magnet electric motor. The combined electric motor and gas engine provide 177 net horsepower and 136 lb.-ft. of torque, with an EPA-estimated mpg of 34 city/31 hwy (FWD); 29 city/27 hwy (4WD).

New for 2009 is a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission for I4, V6 and Premier models, and the Easy Fuel™ capless fuel system. That means no smelly fuel caps to tighten when you’ve finished refueling — just close the fuel door.

Mariner is the first full-hybrid premium SUV in the world. As a full-hybrid vehicle, it can run on electric power at lower speeds (up to about 40 mph), while reducing exhaust emissions. The gas engine then seamlessly takes over, providing V6-like acceleration.

When braking to a stop, the regenerative system captures kinetic energy from braking and uses it to recharge the 330-volt sealed nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) battery pack. The battery pack, in turn, supplies electricity to start the electric motor, allows it to power the vehicle at low speeds and boosts acceleration.

Mariner Hybrid is produced under a carbon-offset program. By funding U.S.-based renewable clean-energy projects that reduce emissions elsewhere, Mercury offsets greenhouse gases at its Kansas City plant by the same amount released during the manufacture of each 2009 Mariner Hybrid.
